If your texture, tone, and dark spots have shrugged off every serum you have tried, it is not your fault, because the real problems live in a layer creams were never built to reach.
Many people arrive at our office having done everything right. They have invested in serums, toners, and creams with impressive ingredient lists, and some have followed a 10-step routine to the letter. Yet the texture is still rough, the tone is still uneven, the redness lingers, and last summer’s dark spots haven’t faded.
That frustration is understandable, and it rarely means the routine was wrong. More often, it means the routine has reached its natural limit.
Skincare works on the surface. Most skincare products, regardless of price or reviews, work on the outermost layer of the skin. Texture problems, uneven tone, early fine lines, and stubborn pigmentation sit deeper, in a layer creams and serums were not designed to reach.
That isn’t a failure on your part. It is simply how skin works.
To change what is happening beneath the surface, skin needs energy, specifically light or laser energy delivered in a controlled, precise way. Two of the most effective tools we have for that are Moxi and BBL. They are often mentioned together, and for good reason, but they are not the same treatment. Understanding what each one does is the key to choosing the results you want.
Moxi works on texture. Moxi is a gentle, non-ablative fractional laser. It delivers controlled energy beneath the skin in a precise pattern, creating tiny treatment zones that prompt the body’s natural healing response and the production of fresh collagen.
It is designed to improve texture, refine pores, soften early fine lines, and address sun damage and uneven tone. Moxi works on all skin types and tones and can be performed year-round, which makes it one of the more flexible laser treatments available.
Sessions typically take 15 to 30 minutes. Most people describe a mild warmth or light tingling during treatment and return to their normal day afterward.
“Moxi treats what you can feel. BBL treats what you can see. Together, they reach what a routine alone never could.”
Know what recovery looks like. Around days 2 through 4, the skin may feel rough, almost like sandpaper, and look slightly bronzed with tiny dark specks. These are called MENDs, or microscopic epidermal necrotic debris. They are simply older, damaged skin cells rising to the surface to shed while new skin forms underneath.
This is not a complication. It is a sign the treatment is working as intended.
By days 5 through 7, the shedding is usually complete, and the skin begins to look smoother, brighter, and more even. Because collagen remodeling continues for weeks, the skin can keep improving for up to 3 months after treatment. Many people tell us their makeup goes on more easily than it has in years.
BBL works on color. BBL, or BroadBand Light, is a light-based treatment rather than a laser, and its role is entirely different. Where Moxi addresses texture and depth, BBL targets what you can see: redness, pigmentation, and the sun damage that builds quietly over time.
BBL delivers precise pulses of light that are absorbed by unwanted pigment and redness. That energy breaks down the melanin behind dark spots and addresses the broken capillaries behind redness, and the body clears them naturally over the following weeks.
It is commonly used to treat sun damage, age spots, rosacea, broken capillaries, and uneven tone, and many people notice visible improvement after a single session.
Treatment feels like quick, warm snaps of light that are brief and manageable. Afterward, there may be mild redness, similar to a light sunburn, that typically fades within a few hours. Dark spots may look slightly darker for a few days before they flake off and fade, which is a normal sign that the light is reaching its target.
Each treatment has its role. Moxi treats what you can feel, the rough texture, the enlarged pores, the dullness, the early lines. BBL treats what you can see, the redness, the brown spots, the uneven color, the sun damage.
Treating only the color may leave the skin looking more even but still feeling rough. Treating only the texture may leave it smoother but still discolored. Because the two work on different layers and support each other’s results, pairing them can give a more complete result than either one alone.
That is why many people who have felt stuck, doing everything right without seeing a change, notice a real difference after a series of Moxi and BBL treatments. The results build gradually over the following weeks, and the goal is skin that doesn’t look treated. It simply looks like your skin at its best: clearer, smoother, and more refreshed.
