Home / Yes, You Can Do Laser Hair Removal in the Summer

Summer is when you’re most aware of unwanted hair. It’s also when most people think they can’t do anything about it. They’re wrong, and here’s why.

Waiting until fall to start laser hair removal is one of the most common mistakes we see. And we completely understand why people think that way. You’ve heard that sun and lasers don’t mix. You’ve been told to wait for cooler weather. But that way of thinking might actually be costing you results, because every month you wait is a month further from where you want to be.

Let’s clear something up today, because summer is actually when most people feel most aware of unwanted hair, and you shouldn’t have to choose between enjoying the season and making progress.

Can you do laser hair removal in the summer?

Yes. Absolutely yes.

The one thing that matters, and this is important, is protecting your skin from sun exposure around your session. Here’s why. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair follicle. When your skin is heavily tanned, there’s extra pigment in the skin itself, which makes it harder for the laser to work precisely and safely.

That’s why we ask patients to avoid direct sun exposure for about a week before and after each session and to wear SPF 50 or higher on the treated area whenever they’re outside.

That’s really it. You don’t have to stop going outside. You don’t have to hide indoors for a week. You just have to be intentional about protecting your skin, which honestly you should be doing anyway.

Some areas are easier than others

One thing worth knowing is that areas that get a lot of direct sun, like your face or arms, need a little more care and planning during the summer months. But areas like your underarms, bikini line, or legs are very manageable to treat all year round, even in the warmer months.

Our providers will always assess your skin and guide you on the best timing for your specific treatment area. We have patients who travel every summer, spend weekends outdoors, and still continue their laser series without any issues. They just protect their skin and let us handle the rest.

“Every month you wait is a month further from where you want to be. Summer is when you need it most, and you don’t have to pause to enjoy it.”

One small thing to keep in mind: give your skin a day or two to settle after each session before jumping into a chlorinated pool or the ocean. Treated skin is a little more sensitive right after, and that brief window just helps everything heal smoothly.

No, you don’t have to stop shaving

This is a question we get asked all the time. Shaving is completely fine and actually encouraged between sessions. The laser targets the root of the hair beneath the skin, so shaving the surface doesn’t affect your results at all.

What you do want to avoid is waxing, threading, or plucking, anything that removes the hair from the root. The laser needs that follicle to be there to do its job. So shave all you want. Just don’t pull the hair out.

Why waiting costs you more than you think

Here’s the thing about laser hair removal that most people don’t fully realize until they’re in it. It’s a process. A really rewarding one, but a process. Each session builds on the last, and results develop gradually over time. That means the sooner you stay consistent, the sooner you start seeing that long-term smoothness and spending less time shaving every single week.

Every month you wait is a month further from where you want to be. And summer is exactly when you’re living in swimsuits, shorts, and tank tops. We want you to feel comfortable and confident in all of it. The good news is you don’t have to choose between enjoying summer and making progress. You can do both. You just have to be a little smart about it.
